Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and distribution of congenital heart disease. We took examination of congenital heart disease against all 1st grade students of an elementary school in the city and 20,000 children of pre school age from 2000 to 2006 with the purpose of analyzing frequency of heart disease of school children and minimizing complications such as syncope and sudden death that could be caused by heart disease through appropriate medical treatment and ordinary health care. First, the number of children who requires reexamination was 2,017 (1.4%) among
the whole 147,142 children and the number of reexamination children among them was 1,495 as its the examination rate was 74.1% and its average reexamination rate was 1.4%. We saw the number of reexamination children is getting increased continuously every year with 1.1% of year 2000, 1.3% of year 2003 and 1.6% of year 2005. Second, the number of children on the follow-up list was 295 (19.7%) among the 1,495 2nd examination children, the examination rate of 65 persons on the 3rd examination was 90.8%. And the number of children who had heart disease was 354 (0.24%) including persons traced among the 1,495 re-examiner while which is similar to other research result as the rate of 24 per 10,000 children. Fourth, the congenital heart disease patients found was consisted of 26.3% of heart septal defect and 52.6% of ventricular septal defect as its result is similar to other research result, 15.8%. Fifth, the frequency of congenital heart disease was 3 per 10,000 in ventricular septal defect and atrium septal defect as it is similar to other result but for complex cardiac, it was 2 per 10,000 as it is different from other research result. It was consisted of tetralogy of fallot, pectus exeavatum, patent ductus arteriosus and coartation of aorta. Sixth, when we look at congenital heart disease for each year, it was 26.3% in the year 2000, 21% in 2002, 16% in 2001 and 2003, 11% in 2004 and 5% since the year 2005 as the patients of congenital heart disease are getting decreased. The congenital heart disease were consisted of each 26.3% of ventricular septal defect and atrium septal defect as it was almost similar to other research. However for complex cardiac, it was 15.8% as different from other research result. For tetralogy of fallot, pectus excavatum, right ventricular hypoplasia and patent ductus arteriosus, it was similar to other research.
